How Is Solar Energy Used Today And What Are The Plans For The Future?
Author: Terro White
Solar energy is a renewable energy source. This means that it can be used indefinitely to provide energy to homes, businesses, vehicles, and many other things. You can find out how solar energy is used simply by searching the internet. It's quite amazing to see all the applications for solar power. There are more than you might expect. Here are some of the most common ways that solar energy is used, as well as a few you might not know about
Residential and Business Power
How is solar energy used most? It's used to power homes and businesses. In many areas of the western United States, there are entire subdivisions that are run on solar power. These areas have such impressive amounts of sunshine that many homes and businesses are able to go completely off the grid. In other parts of the country, there are many homes and businesses that are able to significantly reduce the amount of electricity from the utility companies. Even though many of these homes or businesses cannot get all of their needed power from solar energy, even a fraction of it will save money and the earth's resources.
Roadway Signs
Another way that solar energy is put to good use is with roadway signs and construction signs. Many of today's traffic signals, roadway signs, and construction signs are powered by solar energy. With these signs in use 24-hours a days and with the large number of signs, it's easy to see why this is really fantastic way to put the sun's energy to work.
Vehicles
There are vehicles that are using solar energy for a power source. While many are still in the developmental stage, there are some that are using solar energy to power certain components of the vehicle. More research is needed to create a solar powered vehicle that has the same performance as a gas or diesel powered vehicle. However, the benefits will be phenomenal in terms of decreased pollution and dependence on fossil fuels.
Heating Water or Creating Potable Water
It's estimated that 30 percent of the electricity in America today is used to heat water. If you simply use solar energy to power your hot water heater, imagine the reduction you'll see in your electrical costs. Across the globe, solar energy is also used to create potable water out of salt or sea water. This is reducing the world's dependence on fresh water sources.
A Few Final Thoughts
aHow is solar energy useda is a question where the answers will change in the coming years. More and more developments and research will bring new uses to solar power. As the world looks for more sources for renewable energy and a decreased dependence on fossil fuels, it's quite possible that within a few decades renewable energy will be the only needed sources for power. One can only hope so.

How is solar energy used?
I’m thinking of maybe switching to solar energy, but I need some questions answered.
How is solar energy used and what percent of our energy comes from this source? What are some advantages/disadvantages of solar energy, and how does it help/harm the environment?
Hi Sarah – That is great that you are considering solar power. The previous answers do a good job of covering the main uses of solar power – heat or electricity. Using a renewable energy technology like solar thermal or solar electric (photovoltaic) means that we use less polluting fossil fuels to produce the energy that we consume. Despite the widespread availability of solar power for residential, commercial and utility scale projects, less than 1% of all of our electricity in the US is generated from solar power!
If you plan to seriously investigate solar power for your home or business, the first step is to look at ways to reduce your consumption. Solar energy is clean, but we should still be fully aware of what we consume. In many cases solar power is an investment for environmental reasons and not strictly economic reasons.
Good luck!

How is solar Energy Used in The US?
What Uses the Most Solar Energy in The US?
What a great question. I was very interested in finding out this information as well so I had to research it. What I found is that solar energy is the light and radiant heat from the Sun that influences Earth’s climate and weather and sustains life. Solar power is the rate of solar energy at a point in time; it is sometimes used as a synonym for solar energy or more specifically to refer to electricity generated from solar radiation. Since ancient times solar energy has been harnessed for human use through a range of technologies. Solar radiation along with secondary solar resources such as wind and wave power, hydroelectricity and biomass account for most of the available flow of renewable energy on Earth.
In what ways is Solar Energy used in the US and what uses the most Solar Energy?
Solar energy in the US can provide electrical generation by heat engine or photovoltaic means, day lighting and space heating in passive solar and active solar buildings, potable water via distillation and disinfection, hot water, space cooling by absorption or vapor-compression refrigeration, thermal energy for cooking, and high temperature process heat for industrial purposes.
It has many many uses as you can see, but none more important than for heating and electrical needs, especially here in US where the demand for power is growing and growing as we begin to find other alternatives, for renewable energy besides gas and oil.
Great question by the way, it helped me also in my research. :p
Thank You!
how was solar energy used in the past and now?
i am doing a power point on solar enrgy and i need information and I need answers on where i can look for the right information..in 1)how was the solar energy used in the past?.2)how we use it in now?
Previously we were using solar energy for drying only. Now we are using it to produce heat and electricity.
How is solar energy used to produce salt in from seawater?
I need to find a calculator to calculate the amount of energy used by solar panels?
I am doing a science project and I need to find out if solar panels are an environmentally feasible way to heat a pool compared to the #2 diesel that is currently being used. Is there a calculator that I could use to see how much energy a solar panel uses?
